More babies being born out of wedlock

Good morning!  I'm Kerry Harrison at the business desk and today I'd like to focus in on a very interesting trend that is creeping across America these days.
According to recent stats it has been revealed that one in every four babies among Hispanics are born out of wedlock.  In addition to this, more and more women in their 20s are having babies out of wedlock.  This is a very interesting trend because if these stats are true then it means that marriage is on the decline and that now we would probably see a growth in single parent households.  Could this trend mean that more and more women are choosing to raise their kids without a father?  Does this mean that more and more men are either not willing or unable to make that big commitment?  Does this mean that household needs and demands are going to start changing as instead of catering to families with both parents and kids we are now going to see demand coming from single parent households?
These changes in trends could have an impact on such things as shopping habits, types of entertainment being sort, different needs re vacations and amusements, plus more.  Whereas the present norm is for double occupancy would we now start to see a rising demand for a single parent and kids at vacation spots?  Would the word family now begin to change to fit the needs of one parent and kids?
On the other hand, things may not change because being born out of wedlock may not necessarily infer or mean that both parents would not continue to form the family unit.  Whatever the outcome, it's a trend worth following and it may be something that many businesses may want to keep in mind.

The passport issue

Good day everyone!  I'm Jeff Marquis at the business desk and today I'd like to make a brief comment on the passport issue.
Within the next few months Americans are going to be bombarded by our government and by the media with the new passport regulations that are coming into existence early in the new year.  Come mid January 2007 many persons from those so-called friendly countries will now have to produce their passports when coming into the United States.  Among these countries are Mexico, Canada, and several European and Caribbean countries.  In addition, within the next while all Americans travelling to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean will also need to have a passport when leaving the United States.
I know:  All of these new passport regulations are in the name of beefed up security on our country's part but many of us are wondering out loud how it is going to affect the way Americans travel and do business.  There are indeed millions of Americans who do not have a passport because till now they have not had the cause to obtain one.  They have been able to travel freely to other countries without much difficulty and in total freedom.  With these new passport regulations, you can be sure that great traffic snarls are going to start occurring on a daily basis at our borders.
If Canadians and Mexicans are now going to need legitimate passports in order to enter our country, and if Americans are now going to need passports to travel abroad, are we going to see a trend where more and more tourists and business persons are going to think twice before coming to our shores?  Or are we going to start seeing more and more Americans choosing to stay at home on their vacation break rather than going through the hassle of obtaining passports?
Will these new passport regulations mean longer lines at airports and border crossings?
Will these new regulations signal a new era of isolationism for the United States whereby those countries affected by these new passport rules would now choose to turn to each other for trade, commerce, and tourism rather than coming to the United States?
It's a very difficult balancing act for our government to follow and I don't believe that there's any right or wrong.  No, there's no black or white here.  In order to protect ourselves we have to do something to keep out dangerous persons but in doing so we are now curtailing travel for both Americans as well as for foreigners.
This may have an impact on you personally re how you conduct your business beyond our borders and it may also cause you to think of where you're going to spend your next vacation.
Have a pleasant evening.

A class struggle here in America you think?

Hi everyone!  I'm Heather DeMarco at the business desk and I'd like to kick off the week by republishing an article of interest.
I guess that many of us would be quite surprised to hear the words "a class struggle in America" but according to a recently elected Democratic Senator from Virginia, these words may not be too far from the truth.  I am going to reserve my opinions but I'll let you be the judge.
Have a great day.
   Class Struggle
By Jim Webb
Democratic Senator-Elect
Wall Street Journal, November 15 2006

The most important--and unfortunately the least debated--issue in politics
today is our society's steady drift toward a class-based system, the likes
of which we have not seen since the 19th century.

America's top tier has grown infinitely richer and more removed over the
past 25 years. It is not unfair to say that they are literally living in a
different country.

Few among them send their children to public schools; fewer still send their
loved ones to fight our wars. They own most of our stocks, making the stock
market an unreliable indicator of the economic health of working people.

The top 1% now takes in an astounding 16% of national income, up from 8% in
1980. The tax codes protect them, just as they
protect corporate America, through a vast system of loopholes.

Incestuous corporate boards regularly approve compensation packages for
chief executives and others that are out of logic's range. As this newspaper
has reported, the average CEO of a sizeable corporation makes more than $10
million a year, while the minimum wage for workers amounts to about $10,000
a year, and has not been raised in nearly
a decade.

When I graduated from college in the 1960s, the average CEO made 20 times
what the average worker made. Today, that CEO makes 400 times as much.

In the age of globalization and outsourcing, and with a vast underground
labor pool from illegal immigration, the average American worker is seeing a
different life and a troubling future. Trickle-down economics didn't happen.

Despite the vaunted all-time highs of the stock market, wages and salaries
are at all-time lows as a percentage of the national wealth. At the same
time, medical costs have risen 73% in the last six years alone. Half of that
increase comes from wage-earners'
pockets rather than from insurance, and 47 million Americans have no medical
insurance at all.

Manufacturing jobs are disappearing. Many earned pension programs have
collapsed in the wake of corporate "reorganization." And workers' ability to
negotiate their futures has been eviscerated by the twin threats of modern
corporate America: If
they complain too loudly, their jobs might either be outsourced overseas or
given to illegal immigrants.

This ever-widening divide is too often ignored or downplayed by its
beneficiaries. A sense of entitlement has set in among elites, bordering on
hubris. When I raised this issue with corporate leaders during the recent
political campaign, I was met repeatedly with denials, and, from some, an
overt lack of concern for those who are
falling behind. A troubling arrogance is in the air among the nation's most
fortunate.

Some shrug off large-scale economic and social dislocations as the
inevitable byproducts of the "rough road of capitalism." Others claim that
it's the fault of the worker or the public education system, that the
average American is simply not up to the international challenge, that our
education system fails us, or that our workers have become spoiled by old
notions of corporate paternalism.

Still others have gone so far as to argue that these divisions are the
natural results of a competitive society. Furthermore, an unspoken
insinuation seems to be inundating our national debate: Certain immigrant
groups have the "right genetics" and thus are natural entrants to the
"overclass," while others, as well as those who come
from stock that has been here for 200 years and have not made it to the top,
simply don't possess the necessary attributes.

Most Americans reject such notions. But the true challenge is for everyone
to understand that the current economic divisions in society are harmful to
our future. It should be the first order of business for the new Congress to
begin addressing these divisions, and to work to bring true fairness back to
economic life. Workers already understand this, as they see stagnant wages
and disappearing jobs.

America's elites need to understand this reality in terms of their own
self-interest.

A recent survey in the Economist warned that globalization was affecting the
U.S. differently than other "First World" nations, and that white-collar
jobs were in as much danger as the blue-collar positions which have thus far
been ravaged by outsourcing
and illegal immigration. That survey then warned that "unless a solution is
found to sluggish real wages and rising inequality, there is a serious risk
of a protectionist backlash" in America that would take us away from what
they view to be the "biggest economic stimulus in world history."

More troubling is this: If it remains unchecked, this bifurcation of
opportunities and advantages along class lines has the potential to bring a
period of political unrest. Up to now, most American workers have simply
been worried about their job prospects. Once they understand that there are
(and were) clear alternatives to the policies that have dislocated careers
and altered futures, they will demand more accountability from the leaders
who have failed to protect their interests.

The "Wal-Marting" of cheap consumer products brought in from places like
China, and the easy money from low-interest home mortgage refinancing, have
softened the blows in recent years. But the balance point is tipping in both
cases, away from the consumer and away from our national interest.

The politics of the Karl Rove era were designed to distract and divide the
very people who would ordinarily be rebelling against the deterioration of
their way of life.

Working Americans have been repeatedly seduced at the polls by emotional
issues such as the predictable mantra of "God, guns, gays, abortion and the
flag" while their way of life shifted ineluctably beneath their feet. But
this election cycle showed an electorate that intends to hold government
leaders accountable for allowing every
American a fair opportunity to succeed.

With this new Congress, and heading into an important presidential election
in 2008, American workers have a chance to be heard in ways that have eluded
them for more than a decade. Nothing is more important for the health of our
society than to grant them the validity of their concerns. And our
government leaders have no greater duty than to confront the growing
unfairness in this age of globalization.

Mr. Webb is the Democratic senator-elect from Virginia.

Technicians in wolf's clothing

Greetings everyone!  I'm Jayna Sheffield at the business desk and I'd like to end this week by issuing a warning to you about those technicians in wolf's clothing.  In short, you need to pay closer attention to those technicians who say that they can.
With the Christmas/holiday season on us, you're going to see more and more persons who are calling themselves software and hardware technicians, but in actuality they are nothing more than inexperienced, reckless, and don't give a darn individuals.  For the past month we have received several emails from our readers telling of horror stories re technicians making a total mess of their hard drives, their software, and just walking out and not taking responsibility for it.  In addition, some of them work for these so-called fly by night companies who are also unwilling to make their technicians accountable for what they've done.
These types of technicians and companies entice you by saying that they can come right to your home and do what's necessary for you.  Their rates for service calls and support packages are quite attractive, but they don't have any office that you can visit.  Instead, they work on the road and yes, they have a website that you can visit and take a look at their profile but that's as far as you can go.  They take great pains to avoid accountability and responsibility and they don't seem to care really too much.
They're really good at showing up at your home when you call and they are even better at telling what they can do but as for actually doing it?  I'm afraid that they talk the talk but don't walk the walk.
We've had over 100 emails in the past month telling us of these types of companies and individuals who have come to their homes and their job was to do such basic things such as:
Defragment a hard drive, transfer data from the hard drive of the customer's computer to a diskless drive, port emails from one browser to another, carry out windows updates,  re-image a hard drive, plus other similar types of functions.
According to these emailers, these technicians somehow managed to turn simple jobs into memorable nightmares and their companies don't seem to care.  No accountability and no responsibility.  You can bet your last dollar that during this time of year there are going to be persons in need of technical support and these companies with their rat pack of technicians are only just waiting out there to take advantage of your vulnerability.  Please be careful!  Don't fall for those attractive rates!  Pay the extra money and stay safe.  Check out the company and the technician.  Make sure that they're reputable.  Don't go by what their website says.  Dig deeper.  Use the Internet to do your research and also phone the better business bureau in your area and carry out a check there.
Don't be fooled by a nice looking website with lots of words and nice icons.  No!  don't.  We have recently been receiving several complaints about a company called Nerds Onsite.  Their url is www.nerdsonsite.com.  According to our readers and clients, stay away from this company.  They talk a good talk but really don't back up what they say and their technicians or most of them are simply not qualified enough to do what they say they can.
Have a great weekend.

Access to information technology creates oportunities for all

Hello there!  I'm Matt Chadwick at the business desk and I hope that everyone had a very enjoyable Thanksgiving.
I did, and now it's back to work for me.  Today I'd like to bring home the message that the United Nations is endeavouring to spread and it concerns the importance of access to information technology for all.  Such an important topic and so important for us all.  So many of us take it for granted but believe it or not, there are millions of Americans who continue to be denied proper access to information technology and as a result of this they are unable to adequately and fully access the Internet.  Not very nice and not very good when you consider how important the Internet has become.
Proper access to information technology means that oodles of opportunities would be opened up to those who can take advantage of information technology but for millions of persons this is still a problem.  We hope that the message from the Secretary General of the United Nations will bring this home to everyone.
Have a great weekend.
Access to information technology creates opportunity for
all, especially persons with disabilities, Secretary-General says in
observance of Disabled Persons Day

Following is UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's message on the International
Day of Disabled Persons, observed on 3 December:

The theme of this year's observance of the International Day of Disabled
Persons, "E-accessibility", reminds us of the need to make the Internet
available to everyone.

Access to information and communication technologies creates opportunities
for all people, perhaps none more so than persons with disabilities.  And,
as the development of the Internet and these technologies takes their needs
more fully into account, the barriers of prejudice, infrastructure and
inaccessible formats need no longer stand in the way of participation.

This is a welcome change.  As information and communication technologies
spread across the world, drawing in more and more users every day, most
websites remained inaccessible to the millions of people who have difficulty
manipulating a mouse, or who are visually impaired and need a "screen
reader" or large fonts to read the page.  Slowly, Governments and the
private sector have been recognizing the economic and social benefits of
making websites fully accessible,
and have been putting in place changes involving software and hardware
alike.

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which is expected
to be approved by the General Assembly later this month, can give additional
impetus to this trend.  States that choose to become party to the Convention
will thereby commit themselves to taking steps to provide "information
intended for the general public to persons with disabilities in accessible
formats and technologies appropriate to different kinds of disabilities in a
timely manner and without additional cost".  The Convention urges private
businesses and mass media to do the same with their services.

On this International Day, let us pledge again to do our utmost to achieve
the vision of an inclusive, people-centred, development-oriented information
society.  And let us redouble our efforts to ensure that persons with
disabilities can exercise their human rights and play their full part in the
economic, social and political lives of their societies.

Be ware of those dubious emails

Hello everyone!  I'm Heather DeMarco at the business desk and on the eve of our Thanksgiving holiday I'd like to remind you to keep a very watchful eye on your incoming emails because it is at this time that those murky scammers and identity thieves deliberately choose to pounce on poor and unsuspecting victims.  Many of these believe that they can do anything they feel, anything that they want, and that we are powerless to stand up to them.  Wrong!  There's something that we can do and that is to be aware of their presence and to take note of some of the more common types of emails that they are sending.
We need to keep in mind that scammers and identity thieves have absolutely no respect for anyone and that for the most part their notes are very convincing.  So convincing that if you allow yourself to read the first sentence you could find yourself being easily sucked in. These cyber thugs work on a 7 24 basis 365 days a year, and in short round the clock.  They have no respect for time and by this I mean that they don't take any time off.  They work during and over the Christmas holidays, during and over the Thanksgiving holiday, and always.  They're getting better and smarter at composing their notes and they are using some very enticing tactics to try and get you to fall into their traps.
So, what types of notes should you be looking out for?  I'm going to try and give you examples of some of the more common types of emails making the rounds these days and hopefully it will help you to be more aware.
The loan approval email -  This one has been making the rounds for about a month now and has gotten very common.  In this email the sender congratulates you on your loan application and invites you to provide some additional personal information and even goes as far as to ask you to verify some of your banking details.  Don't touch this email.  Don't even think of it.  Delete it and move on.
The stocks tips  email -  This email is becoming more and more common and the senders of these types of emails are attempting to get you to invest in bogus companies.  They provide very convincing info on bogus companies and ask you to either email your interest back to them or phone them.  Leave this one alone.  Don't even think about it.  These seemingly sound investments are nothing but empty promises that will only cause you to lose the shirts off your back.
Selling mail order products emails -  These types of notes usually swell in number at holiday time and they are nothing but scams.  The senders of these notes advertise too good to be true products and ask you to order them using your credit card and they promise instant delivery.  In truth, they are looking for you to innocently provide your credit card number and then they use your card number to cause devastating grief.  There is no product for sale.  If you get such an email just delete it and think no more about it.
Of course there are many other types of dubious notes floating around but I chose these three examples to get you started.  Please, pay close attention to your emails, but most of all keep an eye on your youngsters to ensure that they don't go ordering stuff that could potentially bring tears and fears to your household.
I urge you to travel safely today.  If you're driving then be extra careful and use patience and caution where necessary.
Happy Thanksgiving.

Interresting conference on purchasing in China

Good day everyone!  I'm Jeff Marquis at the business desk and I'd like to publish an article that was sent to us by our Canadian bureau.  We thought that those of you who live in Toronto Canada, or in closeby proximities, would find this conference very interesting in light of the fact that China is one of the fastest growing global economies today.  Hopefully this type of conference would find its way to us here in the United States much sooner rather than later as I really believe that we need to be paying much closer attention to those very lucrative and explosive opportunities that are just waiting for us to grab ahold of them.

Interesting conference on purchasing in China

Good day everyone!  I'm Jeff Marquis at the business desk and I'd like to publish an article that was sent to us by our Canadian bureau.  We thought that those of you who live in Toronto Canada, or in closeby proximities, would find this conference very interesting in light of the fact that China is one of the fastest growing global economies today.  Hopefully this type of conference would find its way to us here in the United States much sooner rather than later as I really believe that we need to be paying much closer attention to those very lucrative and explosive opportunities that are just waiting for us to grab ahold of them.
Have a great day and before you leave our website check out Untapped Wealth Discovered.  This book lends credence to the fact that Americans need to pay more attention to the demands of the Chinese and Indian economies as these two countries are just waiting for us to take advantage of literally millions of opportunities that are being driven by hundreds of millions of consumers who are very hungry for our goods, services, technology, plus so much more.

Hope you find this article insightful.

Safeway installs new equipment

Hey there!  I'm Alix Shadonnay at the business desk and I'd like to start the week by handing out a large bouquet to Safeway.  We live in times when identity theft is on the rise and climbing alarmingly rapidly.  We are living in an era when scammers and identity thieves have no mercy on anyone let alone our more vulnerable citizens such as seniors and the disabled.  It is my sincere hope that other large store chains will follow the lead of Safeway.
More and more seniors and disabled persons are demanding safer and more secure ways of doing business both on the Internet and at banking and automated machines and they have a right to be concerned.  If we can find ways to make them more secure then it would surely benefit all of us as a whole.
Congrats to Safeway.  See article below.
Before you leave our website take a minute to check out Untapped Wealth Discovered.  This very affordable book focuses on the growing demands and needs of our seniors and special needs consumers and there are hundreds of thousands of business opportunities waiting for you if you're interested.  These opportunities are safe and sound and are worth your while to investigate.  Click on the untapped Wealth Discovered book link to learn more.

Be ware of those extended warrantees for the holiday season and beyond

Good evening!  I'm Kerry J Harrison at the business desk and I'm already in the holiday mood.  So, with this in mind, I'd like to give you some very important tips re extended warrantees.
No doubt this holiday season millions of Americans are going to be purchasing products that are going to be offered along with extended warrantees and you're going to find hundreds of thousands of salesmen who are going to be out there offering you these extended warrantees because their companies will be pressuring them to sell as many as they can.  They are going to try and convince you to buy them and as part of their sales pitch they're going to tell you that extended warrantees will give you that added protection against wear and tear, and unexpected breaks for another few years past the initial warrantee.  This part is true but there are a few things that you need to keep in mind.
First, if a product is to break or fail on you they would normally do so within the first six to nine months after being purchased.
Second, in a recent survey conducted right here in the United States by a leading consumer magazine, it was revealed that about 95% of extended warrantees are rarely used by the purchaser.
You may be asking why this is and according to this recent survey it was revealed that so many of our products are so thoroughly tested before they hit the marketplace that indeed almost of the cracks and weaknesses are ironed out before the consumer actually gets to buy it.  So what this means is that when you purchase an extended warrantee for your purchased item you are actually putting your money into the pockets of millions of companies and they know this.
Yes, when companies offer you extended warrantees you can bet your last dollar that 9 out of 10 times that money will remain in their pockets and they will never have to spend any time, money, or put out any parts to fix your product or give you a new product.
True you say?  Very true and you can definitely do something about it.  When you go to buy your next product play close attention to the type of warrantee that you're being offered.  Take the regular warrantee which will cover you for the first year but stay away from the extended warrantee.  You may think that you're getting a bargain by purchasing an extended warrantee but in actuality all you're doing is putting additional income into the pockets of your seller.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and if you're looking to learn a bit more about ways to keep your earnings safe then pick up a copy of Untapped Wealth Discovered.  This book will show you how to protect yourself from scams, murky scammers, and those get rich quick schemes with their broken promises.

Jobs for Americans?

Good day everyone!  I'm Jeff Marquis at the business desk and as we wind down our week I'd like to touch on a very touchy subject if you may.
It as been extremely evident that during the past few years many of our larger companies and corporations have deliberately chosen to move their call center operations out of the United States and to the other side of the world in such countries as India and China.  Especially so to India.  This trend has and continues to bring lots of headaches to the American economy, devastating hardships to those who seek part-time employment, those who are looking to earn some extra income, those who find it more convenient to work either from home or at night, but it has brought extreme and undue hardships to special needs persons who find it easier and more barrier free when it comes to these types of jobs.
The main excuse that most of these companies have continued to offer is that they are moving their call center operations to India in order to be more cost affective but I say to them that by doing this they have affectively barred the way for Americans to find employment in areas that can help many to earn a decent living.  Although these types of jobs are not very high paying, yet they present a source of income to those who are unable to gain employment in the more lucrative and high paying fields.  What this type of trend has done is to on one hand help corporations to reduce their overhead costs, but on the other it has done nothing but to take away practically millions of jobs from Americans.
Many experts are saying that this trend seems to be slowing and in some cases there seems to be a reversed trend taking place whereby some of the larger companies are starting to relocate their call centers back in the United States.
Not sure what is causing this but I'd like to think that it may be a bit of this and a bit of that.  Pressure from Uncle Sam you think?  Quite possible.  A tidal wave of customer complaints against call takers who don't seem to understand our English language enough to render prompt and efficient assistance on a timely basis?  A definite maybe.  Americans finally saying that enough is enough!  We want our jobs back and we want them back now?  Very likely.
The one thing that most corporations try to avoid is bad customer relations and the experts are saying that millions of Americans continue to complain on a daily basis when it comes to these call takers in India not being able to render the necessary help and I don't really blame my fellow Americans.  If these companies are hell bent on keeping their call centers in India then they should spend the time and money to train their staff to be able to speak proper English and Spanish, they should be properly trained in customer service, they should be given a very in debt training on the products and services they offer, and above all they should be given some very basic Geography lessons.  Not too long ago I phoned an IBM info number looking for a contact number for my friend.  When the call taker in India asked me where my friend was located I told him Austin Texas.  I had to spell Austin and Texas and even after this the call taker asked me where Texas was.  This after spending over 10 minutes on the phone waiting for my requested info and at the end of it all I never got my friend's number.
India along with China are fast becoming countries with very emerging economies and I believe that in the not too distant future our American companies may just find themselves having to deal with employees who will be demanding much higher wages than they presently make.
Have yourselves a pleasant weekend and if you're in the market for a new job or looking for safe ways to earn some extra income then check out Untapped Wealth Discovered.  This book is jammed packed with lots of proven strategies and ideas for you to inspect, investigate, and develop.  Click on the Untapped Wealth Discovered book link to learn more.

Wanted! Seasonal workers for the Christmas holidays

Ho Ho there!  I'm Matt Chadwick at the business desk and I say that it's never too early to start talking about Christmas and the holiday season.  My goodness!  It's November already and just over six weeks to go?  Or maybe a bit less?  Whatever the number of days left, I'm here to tell you that several large chains in our beloved country are looking for you if you're interested in any of the following types of jobs:
Greeters; if you like standing at the doors of a store or supermarket to greet shoppers then you're it.
Gift wrappers; if you enjoy wrapping packages of all sizes, if you're good with your hands when it comes to folding neatly, making sure that the corners of the packages you wrap are nice and neat, if you love putting pows on packages, then hurry up and get yourself to the nearest store and/or supermarket.
There are practically hundreds of thousands of stores looking for people to demonstrate their appliances, electronics, gaming systems, electronic keyboards, even computer systems, plus so much more.  Many stores are even looking for suitable persons to dress up as Santa Claus, as reindeer, even as Mrs Claus.
Many stores are even looking for persons to help out in their CD and DVD departments while others are looking for help re the personal shopper service.  The personal shopper service is a growing thing at this time of year as stores need people to help shoppers do their shopping.  This would entail you helping the shopper to shop, take their merchandise to the cash register, and then escort them home.
There are a few tips though that you should be aware of and I have a few for you.  First, many stores tend to over hire at this time of year and this often leads to shorter shifts.  Second, stores offer very good employee discounts.  Third, the pay is not too bad and there are jobs for almost everyone; from the teenager in the home to the person looking to make some well needed cash at Christmas/holiday time.
So, give it a whirl.  I wish you a very Ho Ho evening.

Paper, snail mail soars during the computer age?

Hey there!  I'm Alix Shadonnay at the business desk and this morning I have a question for you.
Do you agree that paper and snail mail have soared during the age of the computer?  Do you agree that more and more people are still using snail mail to communicate instead of using email and the Internet?
I was a bit surprised when I saw the following clip but I'll let you be the judge.  Thanks to our Ottawa Canada bureau for this contribution.
Have a great day.
Paper, 'snail mail' use soars in computer age: StatsCan
Carly Weeks
Ottawa Citizen, Nov. 11, 2006orps, off a train carrying veterans from
Computers may have transformed our lives, but they haven't reduced the
amount of paperwork piling up on desks across the country.
In fact, between 1983 and 2003, the use of paper for printing and writing
more than doubled, according to a new Statistics Canada study.
But the dawn of the computer age does seem to be causing some behaviour
changes among Canadians.
The study, which looked at the changes computers were expected to make in
our lives and whether they materialized, found that people are talking on
the phone and communicating via e-mail more than ever.
Yet the amount of "snail mail" Canadians send is on the rise. However,
instead of the traditional mailbox, Canadians are using couriers and local
messengers to a greater degree, according to the study.
And despite continued improvements in digital technology and the ability to
conduct video conferences, the amount of business travel Canadians do is
increasing.
Another expected change that didn't materialize is the widespread use of
online shopping that some feared would put an end to in-store sales.
Although private sector sales more than quadrupled between 2001 and 2004,
the transactions still made up only about one per cent of total sales.
Similarly, volumes of postal mail have been rising, although the composition
of mail has changed, and couriers and local messengers are proliferating.
This is the case even as Internet use and e-mail are common in Canada.
Despite the fact computers haven't made some of the expected changes to our
daily routines, the amount of money Canadians spend on such electronics is
on the rise.
From 1997 to 2003, average household spending on computer equipment and
supplies rose to $326 from $299 -- particularly significant considering
computer prices declined in that same period, according to Statistics
Canada.

The social welfare state: Beyond ideology

Hi everyone!  I'm Heather DeMarco at the business desk and today I'd like to share an article with you which is very interesting.  This article was written by Jeffrey D. Sachs and I decided to print it because it raises some very important and interesting issues for all of us to consider.
Have a great day.
The Social Welfare State: Beyond Ideology
Are higher taxes and strong social "safety nets" antagonistic to a
prosperous market economy? The evidence is now in.
By Jeffrey D. Sachs
One of the great challenges of sustainable development is to combine
society's desires for economic prosperity and social security. For
decades economists and politicians have debated how to reconcile the
undoubted power of markets with the reassuring protections of social
insurance.
America's supply-siders claim that the best way to achieve
well-being for America's poor is by spurring rapid economic growth and
that the higher taxes needed to fund high levels of social insurance
would cripple prosperity.
Austrian-born free-market economist
Friedrich August von Hayek suggested in the 1940s that high taxation
would be a "road to serfdom," a threat to freedom itself.
Most of the debate in the U.S. is clouded by vested interests and by
ideology. Yet there is by now a rich empirical record to judge these
issues scientifically. The evidence may be found by comparing a group
of relatively free-market economies that have low to moderate rates of
taxation and social outlays with a group of social-welfare states that
have high rates of taxation and social outlays.
Not coincidentally, the low-tax, high-income countries are mostly
English-speaking ones that share a direct historical lineage with
19th-century Britain and its theories of economic laissez-faire.
These countries include Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the
U.K. and the U.S. The high-tax, high-income states are the Nordic
social democracies, notably Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden,
which have been governed by left-of-center social democratic parties
for much or all of the post-World War II era. They combine a healthy
respect for market forces with a strong commitment to antipoverty
programs. Budgetary outlays for social purposes average around 27
percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in the Nordic countries and
just 17 percent of GDP in the English-speaking countries.
Friedrich Von Hayek was wrong
On average, the Nordic countries outperform the Anglo-Saxon ones on
most measures of economic performance. Poverty rates are much lower
there, and national income per working-age population is on average
higher. Unemployment rates are roughly the same in both groups, just
slightly higher in the Nordic countries. The budget situation is
stronger in the Nordic group, with larger surpluses as a share of GDP.
The Nordic countries maintain their dynamism despite high taxation in
several ways. Most important, they spend lavishly on research and
development and higher education. All of them, but especially Sweden and
Finland, have taken to the sweeping revolution in information and
communications technology and leveraged it to gain global competitiveness.
Sweden now spends nearly 4 percent of GDP on R&D, the
highest ratio in the world today. On average, the Nordic nations spend
3 percent of GDP on R&D, compared with around 2 percent in the
English-speaking nations.
The Nordic states have also worked to keep social expenditures
compatible with an open, competitive, market-based economic system.
Tax rates on capital are relatively low. Labor market policies pay
low-skilled and otherwise difficult-to-employ individuals to work in
the service sector, in key quality-of-life areas such as child care,
health, and support for the elderly and disabled.
The results for the households at the bottom of the income distribution are
astoundingly good, especially in contrast to the
mean-spirited neglect that now passes for American social policy. The
U.S. spends less than almost all rich countries on social services for
the poor and disabled, and it gets what it pays for: the highest poverty
rate among the rich countries and an exploding prison
population. Actually, by shunning public spending on health, the U.S.
gets much less than it pays for, because its dependence on private health
care has led to a ramshackle system that yields mediocre
results at very high costs.
Von Hayek was wrong. In strong and vibrant democracies, a generous
social-welfare state is not a road to serfdom but rather to fairness,
economic equality and international competitiveness.

15 steps to speed up your computer

Greetings everyone!  I'm Jayna Sheffield at the business desk and I'd like to share an article with you that I recently found on the Internet.  Hopefully many of you home users will find it useful because I know that so many home users are constantly battling with how to make their computers faster without having to spend money to buy a newer and faster computer.  This article makes a lot of sense and don't be overwhelmed by the number of steps.  They all make sense and they are all very important.
Have a pleasant evening.
15 Steps to Speed Up Your Computer
by Pinky McBanon
Your question, how do I speed up my computer? You get frustrated when your
computer is very slow. You can now save yourself from aggravation especially
when you are very busy working. I will show you 15 steps to do to speed up
your computer.
Let me enumerate them: As I have also mentioned on my previous articles
1. Defrag your computer at least once every two weeks (I do it once a week).
Go to start>accessories>system tools>disk defragmenter. You can click on
"analyze" first before you choose defrag, it will tell you if you need to
defrag. Just defrag it even if it reports you don't need to.
2. Do Disk Clean Up at least once every two weeks (again, I do this once a
week). Go to start>accessories>system tools>disk clean up. It will analyze
your disk and will generate reports. I suggest you delete files from the
recycle bin and the files located in the temporary files folder. Note: I
avoid compressing files. It's your call.
3. Clean up your program files, delete and uninstall unwanted programs on
your computer. Go to control panel>add remove programs.
Make sure you restart your computer after uninstalling or removing the
program so that complete deletion will take place.
4. Delete all files (temporary files and cookies from the computer).
Here's how: open a browser. On top of the browser click on
tools>internet options>delete files and then delete cookies. Make
your history set to (0). Others wants it on at least 10. I always set mine
to (0).
5. You have to be very careful in installing or downloading programs. Make
sure you need it, if not please just avoid it.
Uninstalling them is really hard. Many vendors has all the power to have
their program stay in your computer!
6. Always turn on your firewall. I suggest you have only one firewall and
one anti virus. You get less safer if you have two anti virus running (I
know people who likes to have two anti virus programs running on their
computer, I don't know why.)
7. Run anti-spyware programs. I trust spybot,
search and destroy and the Adware from Lavasoft. I run SD every week, I do
immunize them before I do the the entire program to run. I run adware every
week too after I run spybot search and destroy.
8. Run complete scan using your antivirus software at least everyday (some
do it once a week). Mine is scheduled at 3:00am everyday.
9. Avoid multi-tasking too much! Meaning to say, avoid opening too many
programs all at the same time running at the task bar.
10. I also suggest you get a dual hard drive (which I know is now common in
the market), one for the operating system only and the other for all the
programs, database and files. This way, the computer boots on one hard
drive.
11. Also check the performance of your computer when connected on the
internet. Go to control panel >network and internet connections  >network
connections >right click the mouse on the connection available (e.g. local
area connection "connected", "firewalled")  >click on "STATUS". Make sure on
the status tab, you will see the speed (mine is always 100 mbps). The
packets sent and the packets received must not have a very high difference.
If it is sending too much packets (as in ten times) than it receive (then
try to do number 7!).
12. Always make sure you install the latest updates on your computer.
13. Always make sure all devices (drivers, etc) are properly functioning. Go
to control panel >performance and maintenance  >system >hardware >click on
DEVICE MANAGER. You will see all the devices and adapters available on your
computer. Make sure you don't see a yellow question mark (?) or this means
there is an error on that device or adapter. If so, you need to update it or
install the right drivers. Updated firmware might also be needed.
14. Browsing the internet? well, I have my google toolbar installed on my
computer and is my default search engine. Their pop up blocker is really
great!
15. A memory of at least 512 RAM might be a good idea installed on your
computer There you go, 15 steps! Good luck!

Good news for diabetics

Hi Everyone!  I'm Heather DeMarco at the business desk and today I'd like to end this very hectic week on a high note.
I came across a very interesting article submitted to us by our research team and I just feel that millions of diabetics can stand to benefit greatly.  The diabetics market is practically exploding both here at home and globally and our government along with several other global governments are at their wit's end re how to provide the products, services, and info that these millions of persons are literally screaming for.
There are hundreds of thousands of very lucrative niche opportunities for those of you who are interested in starting up your own business in markets that are safe, real, and fast growing.  The market of diabetic consumers are all these plus so much more and you should read Untapped Wealth Discovered to learn more.  Click on the Untapped Wealth Discovered book link to learn more.
In the meantime, I hope you find the article below of interest and I hope you have a great weekend.
Inhaled insulin provides diabetics with an alternative to injections

KENS 5 Eyewitness News
Some South Texas diabetics are embracing a new kind of insulin delivery
system to help manage their disease. It doesn't involve needles, and
patients say it's making their lives a lot easier.
William Sickler has coped with type one diabetes for the last 28 years. The
disease left him blind in 1997, but this year, he's been able to change his
routine of five shots of insulin a day.
"I've been waiting for something like this, an alternative to shots for some
time," Sickler said.
The alternative is an inhaled insulin device called Exubera, made by Pfizer
and approved by the Food and Drug Administration earlier this year. A small
blister pack of fine-powder insulin is inserted into the tube.
The patient inhales it deeply into the lungs three times a day before meals.
"It took a long time to develop this. It has to be in a particle size
that'll deliver it to the part of the lung that will allow absorption," said
Dr. Mark Kipnes, an endocrinologist at the Diabetes & Glandular Disease
Clinic.
Patients have to take a pulmonary function test to make sure they can take
the drug this way, and those who smoke or have asthma or lung disease may
not qualify. However, for those patients who are fearful or tired of
injections like Sickler, it's a great invention.
"I've been using it about a month and it's been working wonderfully. My
blood sugars are far better than they have been in the past. I just feel
better," Sickler said.
Kipnes, who has been helping to test inhaled insulin with his patients for
many years, says it's a positive breakthrough in diabetes control.
"It's a nice alternative, and some patients are much more reluctant to take
injections. Some patients will never consider an injection, in spite of our
urging. And they'll allow this as an alternative," he said.
Several other drug companies have version of inhaled insulin that will come
on the market soon.
