Bank teller finds a new career
Greetings everyone! I'm Jayna Sheffield at the business desk and I'd like to end the week on a high note.
I'd like you to meet Laurie Henderson, a very successful female entrepreneur who is going guns in England. Laurie has been one of our more successful clients for over 15 years now and I've gotten her permission to tell her story.
Laurie has been able to turn her life around in a big way thanks to a career change from bank teller to a very successful restauranteur. She lives with her husband and her two sons Jamie and Mark and their wives in the County of Kent and her sons have played a big part in helping her to reap her success. Laurie was 40 when she decided to leave her very mundane job as a bank teller and she decided to try something new. She chose to enter into the food business because of her interest in cooking and she had no difficulty in enlisting the help of her two sons Jamie who was 19 at the time, and Mark who was 18 at the time. Previous to this Laurie had worked at the bank for over 20 years but she wanted to try something new and bring a new spark to her life.
Her first stab at being an entrepreneur was to make and sell sandwiches to her X co-workers and her sons readily took her sandwiches every day to her previous place of employment. She did just okay with this venture and stuck with it for about six months but she soon found herself wanting to do more so she took a bigger step and decided to open up a cook shop in County Kent. This unfortunately did not do well and within a few months she went belly up. However, Laurie was determined to carry on and she and her two sons got together to discuss her next step. They talked a lot, sought the advice of others, and finally Laurie decided to go to school to learn how to run and manage her own small business. At the end of two years she graduated and with diploma in hand, a proper business plan, and two very devoted sons, she obtained a small business loan and opened up a lunchtime buffet restaurant. It was small but very manageable and Laurie and her sons were ready for business.
That was 12 years ago, and today Laurie has managed to open up three lunchtime buffet restaurants in County Kent. She has an overall staff of about 50 employees and her two sons and their wives and her husband of five years are also active in the business. Laurie has gone from being a very dissatisfied bank teller to a very successful female entrepreneur. She has been grossing 7 figure annual revenues for the past four years and she has big plans to expand. We have continued to support Laurie in her efforts by providing her with managerial and marketing consultations.
In her own words: "When I left my job as a teller I was a single mom with two teenaged sons and very determined to make it. My sons were very good boys and stuck by me. We had to work very hard to get where we are today and many days we had to go hungry in order to gather up every penny to put into the business. It was not easy and as a woman there were many barriers for me to overcome but somehow I did. The boys and I worked together to develop my dream and then my dream became their dream. If any woman were to ask me if it's worth it for women to become entrepreneurs I would say why not? Certainly and if they need help getting started then they should read the book Untapped Wealth Discovered by Jeff Marquis and Kerry Harrison. This book gives women the incentives and strategies that they need in order to get started. There are lots of ideas, common sense strategies, and you can't go wrong. Give it a read!"
